| Only a tiny fragment now remains of what was once Berlin's largest railway station. The hugely ambitious structure was designed by Franz Schwechten and constructed in 1880. The station was intedned to be the largest and most elegant in Europe in order to impress official visitors to the capital of the German Empire. The station was taken out of public use in 1943 after its roof was destroyed by Allied bombing. (DK 136) | |||
