Australia 1993

The Eucalyptus trees shed long light pieces of their bark. One time when I was pushing my bike up a long red dirt hill, I heard--what I thought was--the rattle of a snake.  So I started sprinting up this hill with my bike in tow, and the noise followed me. Finally I turn around to give up & realize it's just a piece of bark caught in the spokes. OK I admit I overreacted, but I grew up in the Colorado Mountains, where you run away from the snake & ask questions later. On a subsequent trip we did see a Tiger Snake, only one of the most deadly snakes in the world, and I was down the road before Erik could say, "Was that a snake." (of course he's from Sweden where they don't have snakes so my hyper reaction verses his under reaction served us pretty well.
