Project Two – Sound Composition

Purpose: Gain some basic experience creating a digital sound file using a variety of applications and approaches.

Task: Create a finished sound file at least 30 seconds long. The length may vary dramatically depending on your purpose. As always, having a concept of what you are doing is important, so design your sound file to suit a specific purpose. You may make a song, pop or abstract, do sound work for a film you are working on, create a soundscape, a radio commercial, a radio drama, a sound collage, etc. There are a lot of different ways you can go with this assignment.

Requirements:

A raw sound file in WAV or AIFF format

A compressed sound file in an appropriate format (RealMedia, ASF, WMA, QuickTime, MP3, etc.)

Be sure to follow the Format for Handing in Materials to name your files and organize your CD.

Criteria: Again, you are graded on concept and composition more heavily than execution, although all three elements will factor into your grade for this assignment. Keep in mind that if you choose to use any appropriated material (elements of other songs or audio samples from existing sources), you must do so in a very unique way. If you are planning on remixing a song or attempting a mashup, for example, you must bring a truly unique vision to the piece.
